The Secret Belgian Binding- Judy Summerfeldt
The Secret Belgian binding is thought to date between the 14th – 16th centuries. It was rediscovered by book artist/conservator Hedi Kyle who studied it and claims that it was probably some bookbinder’s secret sewing method and, therefore, not well known until recent years.
The Secret Belgian is a method of binding using a beautiful pattern of exposed sewing that weaves the front and back covers to the book’s spine while attaching the text block at the same time. This beautiful yet sturdy binding allows the book to open flat making it an excellent choice for use as a journal or sketchbook.
